Windows XP Workstation Configuration

Introduction

Installation of networking software is a prerequisite to accessing the web and email, as well as sharing printers and files with other users. Use these instructions to install the correct network components on a Windows XP workstation, connected directly to your computer network. Before you begin ensure that you have:

  1. An Ethernet card installed in your computer.

  2. A Patch Lead connecting your Ethernet adapter to the Ethernet port in your office.

  3. An IP address, gateway address and subnet mask provided by the system administrator

  4. Internet software such as Microsoft Internet Explorer for web browsing and Outlook for email.

Installation Instructions

Note: You will need have to have administrative privileges to set up Networking!

To join a workgroup, click the Start button, then select Control Panel. If you see Switch to Classic View under the Control Panel heading on the left, click that text to switch to Classic View. Double-click on the System icon to bring up the System Properties window. Click the Network Identification tab to get a window similar to the one below.

Identification Changes

Click the Change button to get this window.
  • Fill in a name for your computer in the box labelled Computer name. This will be the name used to identify your computer on the network.

  • If you want to share files with other computers in a workgroup on the network, select the button beside Workgroup, and fill the name of your workgroup in the box below it. This name identifies the Network Place that your computer will be associated with. This is merely a convenience. By using the same workgroup name within your office, it will be slightly easier to find co-workers' computers and printers.

  • If you are using roaming user profiles then click the button beside Domain and fill in the domain name in the box below it. You will have to check with system administrator to see if this is the case.

Click the OK button. The following messages should appear:

You must reboot this computer for the

changes to take effect. Welcome to the HELPDESK workgroup

When you are satisfied with your identification and workgroup settings, click the OK button. The following dialog box will be displayed:

Do you want to restart your computer now?

Click the Yes button and your computer will restart. Setup of your workgroup is now complete.

The Internet Connection Wizard should be found there. Run the wizard to complete your network configuration.

Note: You will have to talk to the administrator of the Igaware Server Appliance to add the new computer onto the system in order to access the Internet.
