Windows 98/95 VPN Configuration
Before you begin you will need to ensure that
your remote computer has:
- tcp/ip installed
and configured
- workgroup
set the same as the remote network
- an Internet connection
- an internet connection (e.g. dial up account)
You will need to know your user name and password,
the remote server IP address and the remote network file server
IP address. The Igaware Server Appliance will need to be configured to allow
remote user access.
If you are unsure of these, contact your system
administrator.
Note: It
is neccesary to ensure that the Microsoft Virtual Private Network
Adapter has been installed.
An easy check to see if
your Windows machine is capable making VPN call is go to My Computer
> Control Panel > Network. Check and see
if there is a device called Microsoft Virtual Private Networking
Adapter. Another device under Network Adapter category should
be found as well called Dial Up Adapter (VPN Support). If
you have a modem in the machine, this device will be shown as Dial
Up Adapter #2 (VPN Support).
If those two devices are
not found in the machine, then please download and install Microsoft
Dial-Up Networking (DUN) 1.4. Or if you already have the latest
Dial Up Networking which includes Virtual Private Networking then
you may only need to Install the VPN Adapter.
Configure a VPN Connection
To configure VPN to connect
to your VPN server, go to the My Computer folder, then Dial Up Networking.
Double click on "Make New Connection". There should already be icons
in this folder which are for your existing connections to your ISP.
If you don't already have any connections set up, you cannot use
VPN.
Now give the VPN connection
a name. In this example we call it "VPN to Office" although you
can give it a different name if you like. In the Device box,
set the device to Microsoft VPN Adapter. Click on Next
to continue.
If you do not have the option
of selecting the VPN adapter, you will need to install it - please
visit the instructions for
installing the VPN adapter.
The most common problem
encountered is people not specifying the correct adapter - make
sure you specify the Microsoft VPN adapter and NOT the dialup adapter.
Now enter the address of
the VPN server. e.g. 80.194.222.87 Click on Next to continue.
Your connection has now
been created. Click on Finish.
Now right click on your
VPN icon and select Properties, then click on the Server
Types tab. Disable IPX/SPX Compatible and NetBEUI, then click
on TCP/IP Settings.
In the TCP/IP Settings window
ensure the settings match the picture below. (notice the Gateway
checkbox is unticked. This allows normal internet data to go via
your ISP connection rather than via the intranet (which will be
slower as it needs to be encrypted)). Click on OK when you're
done.
In the User name
box enter your user name. Now enter your password in the Password
box. Depending on your company's security policy you may want to
remove the tick on the Save Password checkbox. Click on the
Connect button when ready.

Assuming all goes well you
can now connect to the remote server:
- Establish an Internet connection.
- Connect the VPN.
- To access remote files on the server, simply
go into Windows explorer and open the remote file server address
in the format;
e.g. \\192.168.0.1
You should now see folders on the file server.
Note: Ensure your
remote computer is using the same Workgroup name as the office network.
